Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to teach us to seek Allah's guidance (istikharah) in all matters, just as he would teach us a surah of the Qur'an. He said: 'If any of you is concerned about a matter, let him pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer, then say: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi 'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika al-'azim, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru, wa ta'lamu wa la a'lamu, wa anta 'allamu al-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha al-amra - and he names his need - khayrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri - or he said: 'ajilihi wa ajilihi - faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi, wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha al-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri - or he said: 'ajilihi wa ajilihi - fasrifhu 'anni wasrifni 'anhu, waqdur li al-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bihi. (O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You of Your immense bounty. For You are able and I am not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter - and he names his need - is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair - or he said: in this life and the Hereafter - then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair - or he said: in this life and the Hereafter - then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.) No one who seeks the guidance of the Creator and consults the believing creation and deliberates in his affair ever regrets it, for Allah, the Exalted, has said: 'And consult them in the matter, and when you have made a decision, then rely upon Allah.'
